It Still Takes a Village: Centering the Education of Black Children Across Multiple Contexts
Black children attend public, private, charter, and in some cases re-segregated schools in urban, suburban and rural contexts across the country. Yet, many Black children continue to be marginalized and often under-achieve in these educational spaces. The social, emotional, and academic well being of Black children is still important, and it is still imperative that the “village” (educators, parents, community members) center the educational needs of Black children and assume a collective responsibility for their success.

Just let me Be: Be-longing Reconsidered in the Black Radical Tradition
The term belonging is used extensively to guide organizations – including educational institutions – in supporting humans. Yet, very little energy and attention has been given to the genealogy of belonging, and most notably, its invalidation of Black suffering. This presentation offers a re-consideration of the concept of belonging through the Black radical tradition and argues that focusing on being, Black being, and not belonging fosters the true conditions for caring for the whole Black child in educational classrooms.

Queerly Responsive Pedagogy for Black LGBTQ+ Youth
Silence around the relationship between queerness and culturally responsive pedagogy is one of many factors that reinforces the invisibility and neglect of Black LGBTQ+ youth in educational contexts. This lecture will present queerly responsive pedagogy as a framework for teaching and learning that counters anti-queerness and other forms of domination with a critically caring attention to Black LGBTQ+ youth’s identities, agency, politics, and futures.
